About The Event

Prison and police abolition is a topic that has been brought forward by the Black Lives Matter movement. Abolition of the prison industrial complex aligns more closely with social work values for social justice, self-determination, honoring the dignity and worth of the human person and the importance of human relationships. This talk is about how the very existence of prisons and white supremacy culture (even if social workers do not operate within prisons) is at odds with the ethics and values of our profession. Therefore, we have both a moral and ethical obligation to uproot all carceral systems that harm our clients as we are required to serve those in need, fight oppression, and operate with integrity.

This course is an opportunity to think about abolition, social work, prison and incarceration. To question our society's punishment system that is both a real structure we may not believe we are participating in and a system of ideas that we often perpetuate without realizing it. This is course is made by a speaker who previously worked in corrections and now works in private practice. Anyone who works with "mandated" clients from the court system, substance use, or any client base who often interacts with the legal system in any clinical setting would benefit from this course. This course will also address the ways in which psychiatric wards can function on "carceral logic."

This course is approved by the NASW-Michigan Social Work Continuing Education Collaborative Approval # 121421-04
